A new documentary chronicling one woman’s experience as she assumes care of her sister with an intellectual disability is set to premiere on HBO later this month.
The documentary "Raising Renee" is scheduled to premiere on HBO2 Feb. 22 at 8 p.m. ET. (Courtesy: West City Films, Inc.)
The film, “Raising Renee,” follows Beverly McIver and her older sister, Renee, over a six-year period. An acclaimed painter with a flourishing career in the art world, McIver casually promised her mother that she would take care of Renee, who functions at the level of a third-grader, when her mother could not.
When McIver’s mother died in 2004, she followed through on her promise, moving Renee from their mother’s home in North Carolina to live with her in Arizona. Soon realizing that she needed help caring for Renee, McIver ultimately returned to North Carolina — a place she’d vowed never to live after leaving the segregation-filled environment of her youth.
The documentary, which premieres Feb. 22 at 8 p.m. ET on HBO2, follows the two sisters as they adapt to their new reality and confront the opportunity for Renee to live independently for the first time ever at age 50.
“Raising Renee” is just the latest film focusing on disability issues to appear on HBO. In recent years, the cable channel aired Monica & David, a documentary about the marriage of two young adults with Down syndrome, and produced a biopic of autism self-advocate Temple Grandin.

Alabama Respite Receives Caregiver Support in Walker County |
The Alabama Lifespan Respite Resource Network (Alabama Respite) has received a $5,000.00 grant to fund a Caregiver Support Project for caregivers in Walker County. The Project will reach out to agencies, churches, and organizations to identify caregivers who need a “break”, or respite, from their daily responsibilities of caring for a loved one in the home with a disability or chronic illness. Funding for this project is made possible in part by a grant from the Walker Area Community Foundation. The Foundation’s mission is “to build an endowment that will forever support the charitable needs in our community by funding creative, visionary grants.
The Project will have two main goals. First, limited funding for respite care will be available to eligible caregivers through a voucher to help pay for such services. Then, working with area stakeholders, Alabama Respite will help the community build a caregiver support program called Sharing the Care (STC). The STC program will provide public awareness, social supports and knowledge about caregiving skills.

UAB to Conduct Survey of Respite Provider Training Needs |
Two objectives of The Alabama Lifespan Respite Resource Coalition are to determine training needs among respite service providers and implement effective training for these providers. A provider is paid or volunteers to offer respite (a temporary break) for family caregivers of individuals with disabilities or chronic illnesses.
Please HELP by distributing surveys through your agency or organization to those who provide respite to family caregivers of individuals with disabilities and chronic illnesses.
There are multiple options: 1) SEND PERSONAL EMAILS with the LINK to a confidential online survey at: https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/Respite_Providers_Training_Needs
2) ADD THIS LINK TO YOUR WEB SITE with an announcement for respite providers: Click here to take survey
Announcement: Respite Service Providers - we need to hear from you! Please take a few moments to link to an online survey so that we may plan effective training programs.
3) SEND TO UAB individual names, Email addresses, US mailing addresses, and tel. numbers of others known to you who will help with survey distribution to respite providers.
