Respite Night Out in Etowah County PDF Print E-mail
Alabama Respite, in collaboration with Etowah County Sharing the Care, hosted a respite night out for families who are parent members of Down's Syndrome Alabama (DSL) Northeast Area.  Eleven children, including siblings, participated in a fun night of activities while their parent took a break.
Jana Massenburg, the coordinator of the parent's group said, "We had a great time!!! Great feedback from the parents!  Everyone is looking forward to another!".  This respite night was held in celebration of November as National Family Caregiver Month and Respite Awareness Month in the state of Alabama.
Carl Brady, of TV24 visited the program and interviewed Jana and the pastor of Life Church, Keith of us for a spot on the local news.
Thanks so much to Life Church of Rainbow city for providing the location for this respite night and to the volunteers who worked with us to provide this respite.  If you or your church is interested in providing a respite night out for family caregivers, Alabama Respite has a faith based tool kit that can help with that.  As well, our staff can provide needed technical assistance.

The event was held at Dauphin Way United Methodist Church.  Five local legislators attended and answered questions from the host organizations and from the audience on a range of issues, including services for persons with disabilities and their family caregivers.  After the question and answer portion of the program, caregivers and others had an opportunity to meet with the legislators to tell them their personal stories and start a dialogue about the needs they see for their community.  Caregivers also submitted photos and letters to the legislators which outlined their stories and requests for actions.
